So wait, the new Supra is using BMW’s turbo I-6 from the M240i!?!?!?

Ye s. The B58 is an all aluminum, closed deck, in line 6, with a single twin-scroll turbo and direct injection. Toyota should consider themselves lucky to use it, despite all of the delusional Toyota fans who think a 2JZ would be better.

Is this the future? I know we’ve long had things like Vibe/Matrix thanks to Nummi and GM, but in the past few years it seems to have accelerated. FRS/BRZ, that Mercedes/Infiniti QXhatchback, M 240/Supra.

This is news to you? There have been spy sightings of the thing testing alongside the new Z4 for like 3 years or something.

I don’t think a 2jz would be better, but I’m certain a clean sheet I6 from Toyota would be.

Too bad Toyota couldn’t have just lobbed off half of a 1LR-GUE (LFA engine), slap a turbo on it, and call it the day, right?*
*yes, I know it's crazy talk

At least the Pontiac was cheap bastardry. And sure it was the living essence of NVH made flesh and cast into cold iron, but it was tough enough to supercharge.

I don’t know. The B58 is a very nice engine. Maybe Toyota could do better, but I haven’t seen anything to indicate as much. The 2JZ is robust, but it’s not really great in regard to handling and motorsports. Upright, heavy, long, does not like to rev, wet sump, etc. Its great for drag racing because of the iron block and closed deck, but that’s about it. Even the S50 and S38 from BMW have performed decently on a drag strip.
I would regard the S54 and S55 as better inline 6s than what Toyota has created. Even the B58 surpasses any inline 6 Toyota has made. In all fairness, they haven't made an inline 6 in a while of course.
